I had the same issue when trying to use the code in R with the V8 package, and initially I decided to fix the code in the same way. I have since decided to use an earlier version of the package.
In fact, I did the same thing, 3.2.1 seems to work pretty well for me.
Please search the issues. It's been brought up numerous times. This is valid Javascript.
